About Sharon Shannon and Fara

Multiple award-winning Irish artist Sharon Shannon will share a stage with Fara, finalists from this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk awards, who hail from the Orkney isles.

Sharon Shannon is a musician who likes to surprise. While she is known for her arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and Irish-influenced compositions, she has always been eager to explore new styles, and to meet and work with other musicians.

The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status throughout the world and has made the much-maligned accordion 'cool' in her home country. She is renowned for her collaborations, not just in Irish traditional music, but through all musical genres including hip-hop, Cajun, country, classical and rap.

Sharon has recorded and toured with a ‘who's who’ of the Irish and global music industries, including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead O’Connor, Jackson Browne, John Prine, Steve Earle, The RTE Concert Orchestra, The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, Alison Krauss and Shane MacGowan - a list that is testament to Sharon's versatility as well as talent.

Finalists in the BBC Radio 2 Folk awards 2017 as best newcomers, Fara brings together four emerging musicians at the forefront of today’s young Scottish folk scene --Jennifer Austin, Kristan Harvey, Jeana Leslie and Catriona Price’s three fiddles and a piano -- to produce a fiery sound rooted strongly in their upbringing among the music of Orkney.

Releasing their debut album ‘Cross the Line’ in September 2016, the band have gone on to appear on some of the great stages of the world including the Royal Albert Hall in London (BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2017) and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, where they appeared with Cherish the Ladies at Celtic Connections 2017.

“Fara are certainly a quartet to watch. Cross The Line is an ambitious, accomplished and beautiful debut that showcases four musicians’ superb and sensitive musicianship and charming vocal harmonies. A delight.” – **** Songlines Magazine
