Paisley’s Operatic Premier
L’elisir d’amore by Donizetti, presented by Opera Bamba
Opera Bamba will be putting on the first opera in the history of Paisley this November with a chamber production of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. Opera Bamba is also the first opera company to be founded in Paisley.
The show will be held in Holy Trinity and St Barnabas on the 23rd and 24th of November, 2017. Set in the 1920s Jazz age, this chamber production will feature piano, trumpet and snare drum. The principal cast, with singers from all over the world, will be accompanied by a chorus comprised of students from the RCS and members of the Paisley Opera Project. You can read all about the performers on the company website nearer the time.
Speaking about her passion for the show and the interesting choice of setting, director Jasmine Munns said: “L’elisir d’amore was one of the first works that really ignited my passion for opera, so to be directing it is a dream come true for me. We’re really excited about putting a 20s spin on the production, setting it in a speakeasy in 1920s Chicago as this was the era of the nouveau riche, economic upswing, conmen, and corrupt law enforcement. These elements are portrayed beautifully in this opera, and we look forward to presenting what will be an entertaining show, both for the audience and for us”.
Company Director Mathew Oliver, himself a long-term Paisley resident, is eagerly awaiting the culmination of a two year project. “This time last year we tried and failed to put on Puccini’s La Boheme. We learned a huge amount from that production and were able to use that, along with our brilliant new team, to put on a string of successful smaller productions this year. It’s great to be able to say we didn’t give up, and even better that we’re able to work with Paisley’s other opera company – the Paisley Opera Project – to put on a premier of opera in Paisley.”
