The painting is one of the most famous images associated with Scotland. Through its widespread use in commercial advertising and popular culture, the picture has become instantly recognisable yet it remains an extremely powerful work of art and a rich source of debate about issues of history and identity.
This iconic painting, which was acquired after a four month fundraising campaign, will go on display at Paisley, Inverness, Perth and Kirkcudbright. It forms part of the National Galleries’ on-going commitment to sharing its collection and working in partnership with communities across Scotland.
Organised by the National Galleries of Scotland, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Arts Fund and the Scottish Government.
There will also be a range of family friendly activities based around The Monarch of the Glen to offer opportunities for visitors to engage with the painting and be inspired by it.
