Purposeless Movements

Raucously funny and brutally honest, Purposeless Movements at the Beacon Arts Centre, is an eye-opening dance theatre work from Glasgow's Birds of Paradise Theatre Company.

Purposeless Movements

About Purposeless Movements

When they were born the doctors called it Purposeless Movements – for them it’s just how they get around.

Purposeless Movements is a visually stunning work of dance theatre that riffs on the stories of four men with cerebral palsy, how it affects their lives, their gender, their masculinity and their movement.

Originally staged in 2016 Purposeless Movements was conceived by leading disabled Scottish artist Robert Softly Gale. The work explores the comradery of experience and movement of a group of men with Cerebral Palsy. What does this specificity bring to narrative and movement in putting their stories of being in the world with Cerebral Palsy, or just being, on stage? Working with Movement and Assocaite Director Rachel Drazek they considered the questions and taboos around intentional movements and intention in the creation of the work. British Sign Language translation and performance by Amy Cheskin is woven into the movement on stage and the work is underpinned by original music by composer Scott Twynholm.

Funny, challenging and joyous in equal measure, the Purposeless Movements fuses music, video, movement and text as the guys tell the stories of their laughter, their inappropriateness and their tears – stories that ask what it is to move and be moved in the world.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Purposeless Movements are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
