RollerStop mobile roller disco is aiming to open Scotland’s only dedicated roller rink, which will support the growing roller sports community – as well as giving families the chance to go retro and strut their stuff at a roller disco.
People are being urged to help drive the project by getting involved on Crowdfunder – with a range of rewards up for grabs.
Currently running events in Glasgow, Paisley, Edinburgh and Irvine, RollerStop will continue to run events outside of Glasgow in addition to having a permanent space.
Having run events in many venues across Glasgow over the last three years - including The Arc, The Barrowlands, and Kelvinhall to name just a few - Rollerstop events are attended by a diverse range of the city's residents.
Many patrons are reliving their youth, introducing the sport to their children or grandchildren and some are die-hard skaters who have been rocking and rolling their whole life.
There are events specifically for families with young children, families with older children and confident skaters, plus events for over-18s only.
Siobhan Lawson, Director of RollerStop, said: “We love being mobile, but since Kelvinhall in Glasgow closed we haven’t managed to find a space that is suitable with regular access. We want to run more events and more lessons.”
Suzie Beith, Manager at RollerStop, added: “Creating atmosphere in a sports hall is difficult and clubs are a bit too small. The rink will have a real disco feel which adults and children alike can enjoy.”
To raise additional funding for fit-out costs, RollerStop has turned to crowdfunding. This allows people who want to be involved with the project to pledge money, in exchange for rewards.
There are many rewards on offer - ranging from a ticket for the preview party to having the first ever skate on the rink. The campaign launched on Crowdfunder on Thursday September 11th runs for four weeks, with a target of £5,000.
Siobhan explained: “All funds raised through this campaign will be used to purchase essential items such as heating, lockers, seating and cafe equipment. We are a community interest company (CIC) so all profits generated by the business will be reinvested to further improve facilities and run more events.”
RollerStop plans to support the growing skating community in Glasgow by providing regular events suitable for all levels of skater. They will also offer lessons covering several different disciplines - including figure skating, slalom and hockey skills.
The lease has been signed on premises on Middlesex Street, in the Kinning Park area of Glasgow. Close to other leisure facilities, with plenty of public transport links and free parking, the company is working towards opening the venue for an adults preview party on Saturday December 27th, followed by a preview party for families on Sunday 28th.
The first week will consist of special events and taster sessions, which can be accessed by buying a ticket through the Crowdfunder campaign. The rink will commence its full schedule of events on Monday January 5th.
