The party will take place in and around the town hall all afternoon, with entertainment from noon, leading up to the big switch-on and fireworks finale at 5pm.
Visitors to the town hall will have the chance to meet Santa, while there will also be facepainters, Christmas crafts and circus workshops.
Pulse FM DJs will be on the outdoor stage from 4pm to provide the tunes and lead the build-up to the lights going on, with a live performance from singer-songwriter Murdo Mitchell.
Outside there will be funfair rides as well as street performers and entertainers including the Snow Queen and Jack Frost, and a snowglobe photobooth for visitors to take photos in.
The main hall will host puppet shows from noon until 2pm and from 3pm until 4.30pm, while a Christmas Carol service will take place from 2 until 3.
The event is taking place as part of Renfrewshire Council’s ever-expanding town centre events programme, which also includes a switch-on in Johnstone on 29 November.
Last week saw 32,000 come out to watch boyband Union J headline the annual Christmas Lights event in Paisley town centre.
Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall, who will be in Renfrew on the day to help switch on the lights, said: "It’s always an absolute pleasure to get out and about at these events and meet people.
"We had a great time and a great crowd at the weekend in Paisley, but now it’s Renfrew’s turn to shine in the seasonal spotlight.
"Days like these are always good fun for families, and they also bring a crowd in to our town centres, allowing town centre traders to enjoy the benefits of that.
"I would also like to thank the members of the Renfrew Local Area Committee for making a financial contribution towards the staging of the event."
