Major improvements to six community halls across Renfrewshire were agreed at Thursday's Renfrewshire Council meeting along with support for a local development trust and community-managed halls.
Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan has also pledged that the future of all community facilities operated by the council is secure.
£2.5million will immediately be targeted at improvement works to Cargill Hall in Bridge of Weir; Johnstone Castle Community Centre; and the Foxbar, Gallowhill, Glenburn and Ralston community centres in Paisley.
£250,000 will be added to £50,000 already pledged to support the Linwood Community Development Trust in redeveloping playing fields at the Clippens School site. And a further £200,000 is earmarked for community-managed halls as council officials continue to meet with local management committees to discuss support.
Councillor Macmillan said: “This time last year, we doubled our community facilities investment fund to £3million and now we have firm plans for how that money will be spent across Renfrewshire.
“We carried out a full strategic assessment during 2015 and these are the six facilities where we believe that the initial outlay will have the biggest immediate impact and offer the best outcomes for local residents. In addition to necessary maintenance, we are scoping works to, for example, provide more public access PCs in some facilities, or to upgrade their library facilities.
“But we aren’t stopping there. I want to make it clear that we will not close any community facilities. All of the remaining facilities over and above the six mentioned have been assessed, and when we identify further funding, they will also receive investment.”
Environmentally conscious individuals are being asked to volunteer for a new community taskforce to help protect Renfrewshire's rich riverbank habitats.
