Local Public Libraries across Scotland have launched a new series of children’s digital events for the end of term and summer holidays, entitled #StreamMyStory, bringing together authors, illustrators, storytellers and libraries from across all 32 local authorities.

During the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic, when young readers have been denied the vibrant, inspiring mix of author visits, activities and sessions that local libraries usually offer, Scottish public librarians have worked together (virtually, of course!) to devise the best way of delivering entertaining, intuitive content for children online during such a difficult time for library services, schools, children and parents alike.

The result, now launched as #StreamMyStory, is an online hub where teachers, parents and carers will find quality videos from much-loved authors from Scotland and beyond to help encourage young readers in their passion for books.

A celebration of the pleasure of reading and the power of imagination, #StreamMyStory runs alongside this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Wild World Heroes, which is delivered in partnership with The Reading Agency.

#StreamMyStory Listings:

Edgar & Adolf - Phil Earle & Michael Wagg Secondary 1-3
A beautiful game. A terrible war. An unbreakable friendship. Join Phil and Michael as they discuss the inspiration for Edgar & Adolf and the stimulus for their story, how they write collaboratively, and the Scottish setting for their book.

Night Shift - Debi Gliori Secondary 1-3
Writer/illustrator Debi Gliori made Night Shift in response to a lifetime living with depressive illness. Using dragons as a metaphor for depression, this is a powerful visual account of her experience of what it felt like to navigate the bleak territory of depression and come out the other side. Using monochromatic images and very few words, Night Shift is a way to explain the unexplainable, demonstrate that we are not alone with this illness and offer some hope that we will not feel this way for ever. In a time where our collective mental health has taken a battering, Night Shift offers a helping and friendly voice to our young people.

Britannica: All New Children's Encyclopedia - Christopher Lloyd Secondary 1-3
Test your knowledge while learning mind-blowing facts! This virtual quiz show event is based on the best-selling, critically acclaimed Britannica All New Children's Encyclopaedia. Join your host, and editor of the Encyclopaedia, Christopher Lloyd on a journey from the Big Bang to the present day in a series of 8 quizzes, finishing up with a grand finale; there are prizes to win!

My First Book of Birds - Zoe Ingram Primary 1-3
My First Book of Birds, published by Walker Books was shortlisted for Bookbug's Picture Book Prize and included in the Bookbug P1 Bag. The Book of Secrets - Philip Caveney Primary 7-Secondary 1
I wanted to be a writer from the age of thirteen (after reading Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, which I found in my school library). After many years, my first book was published in 1977. Since then, I have published more than fifty more. Sometimes I write as me, sometimes as Danny Weston. I’ve won the Scottish Children’s Book Award and been nominated for the Scottish Teenage Book Prize and the Carnegie Medal. My advice to young writers? Never give up!

The Adventures of Captain Bobo - Kay Hutchison Primary 1-3
Kay Hutchison (in English) and Gillebride MacMillan (in Gaelic) combine readings, fun facts, music and colourful original artwork from the series. There’s even the chance to make a Captain’s hat. Kay Hutchison is co-author of The Adventures of Captain Bobo picture book series that has now been released in both English and Gaelic. Kay's father inspired the Captain Bobo books and her Stream My Story session is in English.  The Gaelic session will be run by popular folk-singer Gillebride MacMillan. Gillebride both translated the series and narrated it for radio - he’s also known for playing Gwyllyn the Bard in hit drama series Outlander.  All aboard for a nautical adventure with Captain Bobo - a magical world of paddle steamers, scottie dogs, lost elephants and fun. Inspired by a real ship (the Waverley) and the real-life stories of one of Scotland’s best known captains the Captain Bobo books celebrate our wonderful coastal heritage in this year of Coasts and Waters.

Super Readable Rollercoasters - Anthony McGowan & Patrice Lawrence
Join Patrice and Anthony for an exclusive interview about their books, Rat and I Am the Minotaur. They will discuss their ‘outsider’ characters, why they are drawn to writing about teens and what they hope readers take from their books.

Lottie Luna - Vivian French Primary 1-3
Hear all about the fun and sometimes scary adventures of a little werewolf, Lottie Luna, and her school friends at Shadow Academy. Lottie is super-fast, super-strong and has X-ray vision. She is also a princess who just wants to be like everyone else. Will she win the prize of the Giant Gargoyle or will it go to Awful Agatha Claws? Vivian French tells us how she created the Lottie Luna books with some top tips for writing your own stories!

Fred Gets Dressed - Peter Brown Primary 1-3
Fred Gets Dressed from New York Times award winning author Peter Brown is a delightful and funny story about non-traditional gender roles and self-expression. Fred loves to wander about his house naked until one day he wanders into his parent’s bedroom and discovers their closet. Fred is inspired to get dressed but what will he choose? Inspired by his own childhood, this is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. Discover how Peter bring his ideas to life on the page.

Mac & Bob and the Party Problem - Alan Windram Early years-Primary 2
Mac the farmer and his dog Bob have been invited to a party. They love parties - all the music, dancing, and lots and lots of food! But there is a big problem… all of Mac’s clothes are dirty from working on the farm and he has nothing to wear. What are they going to do? Follow the story of Mac and Bob with a live reading by author Alan Windram. Rock your socks with the Washing Day Song! Grab your cushions for The Carrot Song! Alan Windram @akwindram is the author of the popular One Button Benny series of books. One Button Benny won the Scottish Picture Book Prize in 2019.

The Broken Leg of Doom - Pamela Butchart Primary 2-4
Come quick, there’s been a DISASTER! A session of EXTREME dancing has left Maisie in hospital with a broken leg and things are taking a real turn for the weird! Join Blue Peter Award-winning author Pamela Butchart for some laugh-out-loud fun – there’ll be seriously silly stories, missing cuddly toys AND even some tuna sandwiches (yuck!). Could Maisie’s leg be CURSED? If it is, and it DEFINITELY IS, then everything is DOOMED! If you enjoyed A Monster Ate My Packed Lunch and Attack of the Demon Dinner Ladies you’ll love The Broken Leg of Doom. Pamela also writes about Pugly (a pup with big dreams) and stories about Wigglesbottom Primary where life is often lived on the edge!
