St. Mary’s was built in 1909 for Episcopalians, who until then had worshipped in a hotel. It is known locally as “the little white church in the wood”. It was built from start to finish in four months.
Twelve years ago thieves broke in and stole a big Victorian safe weighing several hundredweight. A gang of men managed to drag it over the main road. They blew the doors open with explosives. Inside was nothing except a few papers.
