Card with red hearts and verses that rhyme make us think of February and St Valentine.
So Paisley & District u3a will be looking into the real history of this patron saint. Guest speaker Valerie Reilly, a former Paisley Museum keeper of textiles, is going to reveal facts and common myths about this romantic figure. Members and those interested in joining the u3a can attend her free presentation. Just come to the Salvation Army Hall in Mill Street, Paisley between 1.30pm- 2pm.
U3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell said: ‘Many of us believe St Valentine was someone who was helpful to lovers. Yet, the truth is we know his name but not so much about his life. It’ll be interesting to find out why this particular saint is linked with romance. I’m sure Valerie’s talk will be an eye opener on the history and traditions behind 14 February.’
Paisley Patterns author, Valerie Reilly remarked: “All around the world, gifts and sentiments will be exchanged between lovers on St Valentine’s Day. Yet what surprised me the most during my research is that there is more than one candidate to be 'the' St Valentine. In fact, we may actually be celebrating on the wrong day! Perhaps you can guess the word that links a gift sent as a love token and the name of a WWII British tank made by Vickers? For the answer and other Valentine snippets, come along to my talk.”
