Paisley Pirates might well be involved in an important match against Aberdeen Lynx on the evening of 11 November, but in the course of that weekend they’ll also be involved in two very important community events before they go head to head with their Northern rivals...
On Saturday 10 November, they’re taking part in the Piazza Buddies Elf Parade through the town prior to the official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights, while on the Sunday they’ll be taking a bucket collection in aid of the Help for Heroes campaign.
“Both events are very important to us,” explained coach Ian Turley. “We regard the Paisley Pirates as an integral part of life within the Paisley and Renfrewshire community, the local club, if you like, and in doing so we fully accept the responsibility which goes with that territory. We’re delighted that the organisers of the events that weekend have recognised this in inviting us to participate, and we’re looking forward to both. We’ve had so much support from the local community and Renfrewshire Council in particular, so it’s a great opportunity for us to put something back in.”
“During the parade, we’ll have players dressed in the team colours, wearing their elf gear, and officials and supporters of the club will also be taking their place on the walk. I’m not too sure about the singing, though-I’ve heard some of the guys exercising their vocal chords in the showers, and trust me, none of them will be appearing on The X Factor any time soon!”
“As far as the Help for Heroes campaign goes, this is another project very close to our hearts. Apart from the thousands of troops who are doing a fantastic job in some less than ideal conditions around the hot spots in the world, one of our former players, Brian Taylor, who many will remember as an important member of our team not so many years ago (in fact he scored for us when we won the Scottish Cup in 2005), has since seen action as a serviceman in some of these places. A number of the guys in the current squad played with him back then so we’re only too delighted to support the campaign and we’ll have buckets ready to take supporters’ donations as they come in to the Braehead Arena for the match against Aberdeen on Sunday 11 November. We know our supporters will dig deep into their pockets to support the finest of causes.”
