The Awards, organised annually by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), celebrate the exceptional contributions of Scotland’s voluntary sector. This year, a record-breaking number of nominations have resulted in a shortlist of 39 individuals and organisations from across the country.
The Why Not? Trust is a finalist in the Digital Difference category, highlighting their commitment to supporting people impacted by care through their unique online community, The Village. The Village offers a safe and supportive environment for expectant and new parents with care experience, allowing them to access information, connect with peers, and receive one-on-one support.
"At the core of 'The Village' is the commitment to providing an independent safe space for expectant and new parents with care experience. It's a platform where individuals can decide how much or how little they wish to contribute, creating a dynamic online community that empowers them on their parenting journey," stated Moira Greentree, Executive Director at The Why Not? Trust.
The Village utilises a variety of digital channels, including video calls, chats, and texts, to offer confidential support tailored to the busy lives of new parents. Every care-experienced parent joining the community are offered complimentary Wi-Fi hubs and SIM cards, ensuring seamless access to the platform’s resources.
"We believe in the power of choice. 'The Village' is a space where parents can engage as much or as little as they want, ensuring that their unique voices and experiences are valued. We offer the support all new parents need and being digital allows us to be accessible to all, and easy to reach at a time that suits the parents.”, emphasised Moira Greentree.
Developed in collaboration with parents with experience of care, Care Visions Fostering, Early Years Scotland, and Scottish Attachment in Action, The Village sits within The Why Not? Trust's wider work, evolving and growing based on the experiences and feedback from its community.
The Scottish Charity Awards winners will be announced at a celebratory ceremony in Glasgow on 20 June 2024, hosted by broadcaster Sally Magnusson. The public can vote for The Why Not? Trust in the People’s Choice Award by visiting scvo.scot/vote before 5pm on Friday, 24 May 2024.
Anna Fowlie, Chief Executive of SCVO, said: “Our 39 finalists demonstrate just how essential the voluntary sector is to Scottish society, with dedicated organisations and individuals going above and beyond to make a positive and often life-changing impact in their communities. Everyone at SCVO is looking forward to shining a light on their essential contributions at our awards ceremony in June. The public has the chance to celebrate each of our finalists through the People’s Choice vote, so don’t miss your opportunity to get involved and get behind your favourite finalist by voting now!”
