The charity has just completed refurbishing the former Argos store on Causeyside Street, Paisley to its original Art Deco design, creating a new permanent art gallery in the heart of Paisley town centre.
To celebrate this exciting new chapter, “Deco 2025” will explore the Art Deco movement, stemming back to the early twentieth century when Art Deco first burst onto the world stage.
Art Deco, short for the French Arts décoratifs, is a collection of visual arts styles in architecture and product design, first appearing in Paris during the 1910’s. Over the next two decades Art Deco spread across the globe, influencing everything from iconic architectural wonders such as The Chrysler and Empire State buildings in New York, to furniture, sculptures, and household items.
Often categorised by bold, geometric shapes, rich colours and luxurious materials, Art Deco was the mark of glamour, luxury, and exquisite craftmanship at the height of The Jazz Age.
The exhibition features work by 50+ artists - mainly paintings, some sculptures and ceramics and curated items. 50 prints of artworks by Tamara De Lempicka, EA Seguy, Erté; a range of homewares, ceramics, and tableware in an Art Deco style with some original vintage pieces. Additionally, there will be a reading and reference area with books and guides to the Art Deco period. Visitors will enjoy examples of the life of the 1920s and 30s - from the bright young things cocktail set, high tea at Claridge’s, examples of uranium glass, chrome ware, lovely aquiline lamps and lustre ware and a few bits of glitz and glamour – highlighting an era of luxury which emerged from post-war gloom.
Steven Thomson, Creative Director, The Art Department: “We have always been fascinated by the Art Deco movement, and we felt it was fitting to host an exhibition to celebrate our new home and mark the centennial of the 1925 Paris Art Deco exposition. This show recognises its enduring influence on design and architecture and how it continues to inspire new generations of artists and designers. We will have a variety of Art Deco items to view and look forward to welcoming visitors to our closing exhibition of 2025.”
“We’ve enjoyed a successful run in our new home. We have seen increased visitors and sales and high levels of participation in our workshop programme. We’re truly delighted to have settled into our permanent art gallery and home.”
