A unique cricket match will be taking place at Ferguslie Cricket Club, opposite the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Corsebar Rd, Paisley on Sunday, 10 August at 1.00pm when the Independence Cup returns to the ground, featuring what is sure to be a highly competitive match between the Scottish Pakistani X1 and the Scottish Indian X1 in a special T20 clash.
Haroon Tahir, manager of the Scottish Pakistani X1, commented, “it’s a very special date in the calendar as it’s a celebration of cricket and cultural unity, and a vibrant tribute to the communities’ shared passion for the sport. It goes beyond being just a game, as both teams will feature Scottish-born players of Indian and Pakistani heritage, many of whom are already playing representative cricket at a high level for their clubs, and who are actively involved in the Cricket Scotland Pathway system. The match offers a platform for these young players to demonstrate their skills on a big stage, while inspiring the next generation of cricketers from ethnic minority backgrounds.”
He continued, “The event has been carefully curated by organisers Rana Fareed Hussain and Rana Tahir Aslam, who have long been advocates for community cohesion through sport. Team management for the Scottish Pakistani X1 has been placed in the hands of myself, and Taral Khasiya in respect of the Scottish Indian X1, and we’ve been inviting players of a suitable standard to take part.”
“Spectators can expect a day full of exciting cricket, positive community spirit, and a shared love for the game. Free food will be available for all players and spectators after the game, adding to the festival-like atmosphere of the day, and admission is absolutely free. The event is not only a celebration of India and Pakistan’s independence days but is also a proud moment for Scotland’s multicultural cricket scene, where talent is thriving, and pathways are being created for future stars of the game.”
