The very successful LEGO exhibition Brick City, held at Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, has now ended, with the highest number of visits to a single exhibition at the Museum ever recorded and local businesses reporting increased turnover and footfall.
Over its 16 week run Brick City attracted over 50,000 visitors who also contributed to the best retail income for Paisley Museum’s shop in over 13 years. The busiest day at the exhibition welcomed over 2000 visitors.
Research carried out by museum staff shows that the high profile exhibition was not only popular with locals, but attracted visitors from all over the country with 58% of customers surveyed stating they had travelled from out with Renfrewshire.
The high visit figures to the exhibition have also had a positive impact on local business community who have seen an increase in footfall and turnover as a direct result of the exhibition. Of local businesses that participated in Brick City promotion, 89% stated that they had noticed an increase in customer footfall/revenue and 89% also stated they noticed an increase in new customers from out with the Paisley area.
One local business owner, Jennifer McKay who runs Deli Malatso commented; ‘...this is the first event that has been held up this end (of Paisley) that has dramatically made an impact to my business.’ Andy McGraw of Games Centre said ‘It (Brick City) brought customers in the store that previously didn’t know the shop was there’
The Brick City exhibition was a display of the world’s most iconic buildings and landmarks by LEGO artist, Warren Elsmore, one of the few professional LEGO artists in the country. Paisley Museum was the first museum in the country to host this exhibition which included models of the London 2012 Olympic Park and St Pancras station, Rome’s Colosseum and the Las Vegas strip.
Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport leisure and Cultural Policy Board said ‘The success of Brick City has been a tremendous boost for Paisley Museum and Art Galleries, the town centre businesses and the people of Renfrewshire. It has been wonderful to see so many visitors to Paisley town centre, and it’s especially encouraging to see many thousands visiting Paisley for the first time. Renfrewshire Council is committed to the regeneration of Paisley town centre, and the phenomenal success of Brick City clearly shows how culture can, and does, make a difference. ‘
The Brick City exhibition will now move on to Newcastle.
