Research shows that it is easier to talk little and often and build on each stage as kids get older rather than having a one-off talk.
The Talk Together project helps parents to gain confidence on the best ways to approach the sensitive topics of growing up, pregnancy, puberty, sexual health and relationships.
Parents can drop-in to the information sessions, which take place on 3 October, 11am at Glenburn Library and 7 October, 1:30pm at Ferguslie Library, to find out more about the Talk Together book collection and sign up for workshops.
The Talk Together books, which are available at most libraries, cover a wide range of ages and reading abilities and library staff can help parents pick out the best book for their child.
Councillor Stuart Clark, Depute Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said: “Evidence shows that children whose parents have talked with them about relationships and growing up are more likely to have healthier relationships, feel more confident about their bodies, delay the onset of sexual behaviour and when they do, have healthier and safer sexual experiences than those whose parents do not talk with them.
“Libraries are a great place for families to get together and talk through these sensitive issues in comforting and familiar surroundings. The Talk Together information sessions will help parents who don’t know where to start or are looking for more information.”
The Talk Together project is a joint partnership between Renfrewshire Libraries, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Improvement Team – Sexual Health and Renfrewshire Community Health Partnership.
