Home Sweet Scotland, organised by OneRen – the local charitable trust providing cultural, leisure and sporting opportunities to help people enjoy active and healthy lives – takes place on Sunday, June 26 with two events to cover all ages.
The World Foodie Boogie takes place on the Sunday afternoon between 1.30pm and 4pm, in the Students’ Union, UWS, Storie Street and is a family-friendly event featuring a rich global fusion of food, music, crafts, stalls and Jambo! Radio. Everyone aged 0 – 100+ is welcome so come along and join the fun! Tickets cost £3 and includes food but locals / groups that would find this a financial barrier, please read on!
On the Sunday evening at 6.30pm until late, an evening of music curated by Matt Hickman and headlined by his band, Brownbear takes place at The Bungalow, in Shuttle Street.
The event will also feature the bands and artists, Washington, Paix, Becky Sikasa and Bemz. Doors are at 6pm; come early so as not to miss a thing. Anyone over the age of 16 can attend, although 16 and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18. Entry costs £12 and £10. Again; if finance is a barrier – please keep reading.
Matt Hickman said: “We have a diverse line up of exciting new talent performing, all of whom have lived experience of growing up differently in Scotland. This event is designed to have something for everyone and to be welcoming to all.”
Tickets for both the Home Sweet Scotland events are available from www.refugeefestivalscotland.co.uk/whats-on/ and any individual or group who wish to come, but are facing financial barriers, please email oneren_arts@renfrewshire.gov.uk.
Matt added: “Since both these events are open to all, we aim to break down barriers, help people who have come to Scotland settle in their new home and show that refugees are welcome and valued members of our society.
“Using the arts and in particular music is a great way of integrating refugees, as we can experience the variety and richness of the different cultures they bring to Scotland.”
Janis Marshall Reilly, OneRen’s Performance Programmer (Children and Families) said: “Refugee Festival Scotland takes place every year in June to celebrate World Refugee Day.
“Each event helps to shine a light on the cultural richness and diversity of our communities.
“The Festival is a celebration of the food and drink, music and poetry, art, dance, language and ideas that people bring with them when they settle in Scotland.
“OneRen is proud to be part of this annual national fiesta with its own mini festival in a day – Home Sweet Scotland.”
