The event was chaired by Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP. Contributions came from speakers including the Rt Hon Nicola Sturgeon First Minister of Scotland, two school children from Our Lady’s High School in Cumbernauld, Grace Lennon and Zara De Almeida, Dr Radhika Govinda Senior lecturer in Sociology at Edinburgh University and comedian Susan Morrison. The event also celebrated 20 years of the SWC with contributions from The Minister for Equalities and Older People Christina McKelvie MSP and singer Suzanne Bonnar.
The Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Alison Johnstone MSP, speaking ahead of
the event said: “The Scottish Parliament has celebrated International Women’s Day with this event for over 15 years, inviting women from across Scotland to address collectively the challenges they face.”
SWC Chair, Agnes Tolmie, says:
“This year our event is a celebration of what we have achieved in the last 20 years for women in Scotland. The SWC celebration will be broadcast on Scottish Parliament TV to facilitate more women joining us. The SWC will be highlighting speakers from previous IWD events to celebrate the achievements of our organisation. We are proud of being an organisation that listens to women and ensures their voices are threaded throughout all the work we do. Women make up more than 50% of the Scottish population and we have still not achieved equality.
However, when we look at the wonderful work done by women in Scotland we have every reason to celebrate. We are looking forward to an afternoon of inspiring and motivational contributions which showcase Scotland’s achievements in working for a fairer society. Our women and girls look forward to what the next 20 years could bring. We will also hear how women have become empowered to be part of the solution to making Scotland a more equitable place to live”
