The event which takes place on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September is Scotland’s largest free festival celebrating heritage and the built environment, as well as the chance to learn more about buildings old and new.
A number of Renfrewshire locations will be open to the public across the weekend, many with kids’ activities planned to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.
As part of the activities on offer people can enjoy a celebration of the life and works of Robert Tannahill, 250 years since his birth, as local choirs and groups will perform in front of the recently refurnished Paisley Town Hall on the Saturday. Visitors will also have the chance to see the opening of the grade A listed Bascule Bridge in Inchinnan as part of this year’s programme.
Buildings offering people the chance to visit and delve deeper into their history include the striking Paisley Methodist Central Hall, Sma’ Shot Cottages and Weaver’s Cottages in Kilbarchan. The Secret Collection on Paisley High Street will also welcome visitors - home to thousands of objects from the Paisley Museum Collections.
Great outdoor spaces also taking part in Renfrewshire’s Doors Open Days weekend include the RSPB Nature Reserve in Lochwinnoch, Barshaw Park’s Walled Peace Garden and Renfrew Association of Growers and Gardener based in Broadloan Community Gardens.
Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron is encouraging people to get out and experience Renfrewshire this Doors Open Day.
Provost Cameron said: “We are very lucky to have so many spectacular buildings in Renfrewshire that are steeped in history and have fantastic stories to tell.
“This year is particularly special as it offers us a chance to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Tannahill, one of Paisley’s most famous sons.
“Doors Open Days is a great opportunity for people to find out more about the places they pass every day but have maybe never ventured into. I’d encourage everyone to embrace their sense of curiosity about the places they live and explore the hidden gems and fascinating venues on their doorstep.”
Doors Open Days is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days supported by Historic Environment Scotland.
The full list of participating in-person and online venues can be viewed online at or www.doorsopendays.org.uk and more information can be found on the Renfrewshire Council website.
