The opening reception of the exhibition will take place on Friday 12th April from 6pm in the evening until 8pm. This is Anne’s first solo exhibition which will showcase a collection of contemporary watercolour paintings, which were inspired by lockdown walks around the village of Neilston, East Renfrewshire.

Anne is a figurative painter focussing mostly on the urban environment. Her medium of choice remains watercolour, in her opinion, a somewhat overlooked and misunderstood medium. This current series of fire hydrant and drain covers, showcases her technical skills and demonstrates the almost photo realistic, yet painterly results which can be achieved.

Tour guides usually urge people to ‘look up!’ when exploring a city, but a downwards glance can be equally rewarding. Anne says ‘Within my work I notice and document. In the streets, I am curious about the traces people leave behind. Walking during lockdown, daily life shrunk. In uncertain times, it helped to focus only on where I was and what I could see. Simple things fascinated me, such as worn paths, graffiti, and litter. I began to see, notice and appreciate where I was. Identical fire hydrant covers become different and unique in time because of location, footfall and weathering. By immersing myself in the minutiae in urban spaces, and sharing this with others, these spaces are no longer over-looked and invisible, but instead become seen, noticed and appreciated by others.

Anne MacLeod was born in Cumbernauld, Scotland and now lives in Neilston. She began painting in watercolour in 2006 and has continued to paint and sell her work throughout her career in the Civil Service. She is a member of Paisley Artists and Paisley Art Institute. In 2023 she completed a BA in Painting from University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, England. This body of work is the culmination of her honours year.
